~ seki gokurakuin on practicing the Infinite Boost |
Not to be confused with Infinite Flight (IF) (which is the result of a glitch), the Infinite Boost is a version of the Dive Boost where you fall at an extra-shallow angle and a super-slow speed. If done correctly, it allows you to gain height without using your scarf.
This boost is sometimes called the Anshient Boost, after the user TheAnshientMariner, who helped make the boost more popular. However, sometimes people might differentiate between the Infinite Boost, and the Anshient Boost, with the latter being a variation that includes scarf usage.
It's recommended to learn Slow Boost, Flap Boost, and possibly Level Boost before trying to learn the Infinite Boost.
How to do an Infinite Boost[edit | edit source]
Difficulty: (Somewhat easier in Paradise.)
Note: These instructions could probably use improvement, as the no one who's actually accomplished an Infinite Boost has actually contributed to it, yet. [clarification needed]
- Start from a ledge, or other high point.
- It's recommended to start in the Broken Bridge level, from one of the pillars close to the shrine.
- If you can, walk off the ledge. (Otherwise, you can jump, though this might not be considered a true "scarfless boost".)
- For a split-second, aim your camera fully toward the ground, and push the movement stick all the way forward.
- Like with the Flap Boost, you need a short dive in order for the game to register that you're diving, however, it seems that it needs to be longer than with a Flap Boost.
- Once you've started diving, ease up on the movement stick, using more pressure than you might for a Slow Boost (at least the slowest of regular Slow Boosts), but less than you would for a full on Dive Boost. At the same time, flick the camera stick briefly to level out the camera a bit.
- If you got the right angle AND did the initial dive right, you should be able to see the "root" of your scarf from underneath, with the wayfarer's legs hanging down just enough that they appear to touch the bottom of the the cloak.
- It may also help to have the head somewhat visible, but not too much so.
- Before you get too close to the ground, point the camera all the way down and point the wayfarer toward the camera. (Or point the camera up, and point the movement stick all the way forward.)
- If you did this properly, you should fly up higher than when you started.
- Repeat steps 3-6 as often as you like!
Tips[edit | edit source]
The recommended camera angle for diving is about 30 degrees below a level camera, or about a third of the way toward the ground. It also seems about halfway between the lowest camera angle and a level camera.
Try working on the camera angle before working on the body position.
If you find yourself pushing all the way forward and the Wayfarer still isn't diving fast enough (and the added wind sound is missing), then either you ended the initial dive too early (try diving for just a bit longer before easing up on the pressure) or the camera is too high (don't raise it as much).
If you have trouble getting the right traveler + camera position, try using the idea body pose as a confirmation that you have the right position, instead of making the body pose your goal.
Like with most dives, you should hear a bit of an extra wind-whistling effect, though it will be subtler than with a steeper dive - almost imperceptible.
The dive should still feel like a dive, just super-slow. If it feels like you're falling instead of diving, you're probably going too slow.
If you're just starting out, it's probably better to start out with a bit too much of a dive than a bit too shallow of one.
If you're still having trouble getting the position/feeling/whatever right, you might want to try recording yourself during your practice; you look at your recordings and compare them to a reference. PS4 and iOS devices have built-in ways to record your gameplay. On PC, OBS is a popular option. If you're playing on PS3, however, you might need to use a capture card, or your phone.
Try going into a faster dive just before you fly upward. This can give you a better boost.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
Even though this boost is named after TheAnshientMariner, Anshient gives credit to Ryuichi-san (AKA Amen_Ra-13) and Bradjel (AKA wlopi) for teaching him this technique, and discovering scarfless boosting, respectively.
